Community Marine Protected Area of the Urok Islands (AMPC Urok), was created in 2005 and is located in the northern part of the Bijagós Archipelago. This Marine Protected Area (MPA) is managed directly by the local communities with support from IBAP and Tiniguena, a local NGO. It encompasses a number of islands and islets, the main ones being Formosa, Nago and Chediã, with a total area of 545 km2. It was established to help communities to manage their marine resouces more sustainably and to ensure their access to prime fishing grounds while at the same time protecting vulnerable and endangered species and habitats.
